Ever met a Mega Millions lottery winner who also survived 8 lightning strikes and 12 shark attacks? Well, now you have: Melvin.
Melvin is about 10 years old and a sturdy 47 pounds. We don’t know his life story but his teeth tell us a lot—almost all of them are ground down to the gum line. That suggests Melvin spent most of his life chewing something harder than his teeth—the bars of a cage, for example, or a chain. We don’t know, but we have plenty of reasons to suspect that most of Melvin’s life has been spent in rough circumstances. He arrived at the York County shelter without a microchip and with plenty of flea-induced hair loss. He’s got an egg-sized fatty tumor on one side. A little arthritis make stairs hard and give our guy a limp, but that’s enough about all the things Melvin doesn’t have. Let’s talk about what he does.
First, Melvin has our commitment that he will live the rest of his life indoors, cared for, fed, and loved. When Halfway There pulls a dog from a shelter, we are making that dog a promise that he will never, ever return to whatever circumstances brought him to us. Shelter staff have to make impossible decisions every day, and when they asked us to save Melvin’s life, to give a sweet older gentleman a billion-to-one shot at getting out, at getting home, we did. And we mean to keep our promise to him for as long as he lives.
The good news is, despite his lumps and bumps, Melvin has plenty of pep left in his step. He loves to go for walks and wags his tail the whole time. He enjoys a good snuggle, meeting other dogs, and is great with humans of all kinds. He’s house-trained, sleeps happily through the night on his blankets, and does not jump on furniture or people.
Melvin is a survivor, and now it’s his chance to thrive. If you’re looking for a low-key companion to nudge your hand for pets and take you proudly around the neighborhood, consider giving Melvin a safe and happy home. You just might end up realizing you’re the biggest jackpot winner of them all.

Meet Lolly, a precious 12-year-old-beagle with a heart of gold. When she's is not napping in her favorite sunspot, she's begging for a bite of whatever you're eating. Lolly was diagnosed with spondylosis, which is a condition that effects the vertebral bones of the spin. It is hard for her to navigate steps, and she sometimes has issues with her footing on wood floors. Her pain is currently being managed by pain medication/NSAID --which will more than likely need to be taken for the remainder of her life. Lolly does amazing in her foster home that has 6 dogs, which are both big and small. She absolutely adores children of all ages. Lolly does very well with going potty outside, but she will sometimes have an accident in the house. We tell her that's okay, as accidents happen.
If you're looking for a loyal companion who will cherish every moment with you, Lolly is your girl.
"Love never grows old. Adopt a senior dog."

Hey, I'm Pip, or Pip Squeak! I'm all puppy. I love my toys (great at playing on my own), t-shirts and meal time!! I was found burned on my back. It didn't phase me though, I've remained my spunky self. My vet records say I am a husky mix, but I am only 8 lbs so I'm not quite sure what I may be! I've completely healed over the past few weeks and now looking for my forever home. I sleep through the night in my crate. I am a pretty big fan of my crate as a safe space when I get tired of playing. I am still working on potty training as puppies do. I may not be suitable for young kids as I'm a little mouthy and nippy. I am still learning the ropes like a typical puppy, so your time is required to make me the best version of my cute, peppy, playful, brave self!
Selena is an outgoing, fun, spunky 2-year-old, 54 lb. boxer who has such zest for life. Despite having been found tied to a tree with a shock collar on, Selena "Lena" loves all people, from kids to adults. She is extremely dog friendly and loves to wrestle with her 4-legged foster siblings. She is good on a leash, but prefers to potty outside off a leash. She is working toward pottying outside 100% of the time. Lena sleeps soundly in her crate at night and when her foster mom is at work. Lena is fostered with children and dogs, and we are confident she'd do well in a home with or without both. Lena cannot wait to find a forever home who can offer her stability and unconditional love.
Hi I’m Bodhi! Id love to meet you and be a part of your family I’m about one year old, super playful, very smart and house broken! I would do awesome in a family who loves walks, has another playful pup or where I’d be the only pup. I love people including kids and once I’m done playing I love to snuggle They tell me I’m a husky mix maybe, whatever that means! I hope to meet you soon. Love, Bodhi
Meet Windy, your new best friend! This little lady is approximately 12 weeks old and is such a sweetheart. She is a female pittie/shepherd mix. She’s working on basic puppy training and is very smart- walks well on the leash, she knows “sit” and come”. Sticks are her favorite thing to find in the yard. She’s playful, snuggly and so loving! She does well with other dogs, so she could be an only pup or an addition. Just look at those ears!
Spring has finally arrived, and Blossom can’t get enough of it! Blossom is a twelve-week-old female puppy. She’s likely a mix of many different amazing breeds, but it’s thought that she’s predominantly American Staffordshire and Labrador Retriever. That said, her long, adorable ears suggest there might be a hint of hound in her too! Not much is known about Blossom’s life before rescue, but she’s quickly adjusted to long naps in the sun and treats on the hour! Blossom was meant to be spoiled and beloved. The thing that defines Blossom is her huge heart. She loves, loves, loves. This puppy follows her foster mom around, eager to stay by her side no matter what. Whether it’s people or other dogs, Blossom just wants to shower others with affection - endless kisses and cuddles. She is as sweet and smart as they come! Often, when she sees her foster parent across the yard, she’ll break into a full sprint just to be the first of her littermates to receive some pats and belly rubs. Blossom is destined to be one lucky adopter’s best friend for life. Blossom is a foodie at heart, so she will likely be fairly easy to train using food incentives. She is doing very well with crate-training and house-training, but - because of her young age - will need a family committed to consistency over the next few months for her to thoroughly master these skills. While she hasn’t started leash training yet, her foster parents intend to introduce her to the leash soon. Blossom hasn’t met any cats in her day, but she’d almost certainly befriend any feline companions. Blossom does have a small hernia on her belly, which doesn’t slow her down one bit (and will easily be corrected when she is old enough to be spayed). Blossom is truly one-of-a-kind. This puppy has so much love to give and joy to bring. Her foster family has completely fallen for her and is determined to ensure she finds the best forever home - a place that will shower her with love and attention. If you think Blossom might be your perfect match, apply today! She will melt your heart.
Spring has finally arrived, and Bloom is loving it! Bloom is a twelve-week-old female puppy. She’s likely a mix of many different amazing breeds, but it’s thought that she’s predominantly American Staffordshire and Labrador Retriever. Not much is known about Bloom’s life before rescue. When she arrived at her foster family’s home, she was a little bit shyer than her siblings, unsure what to make of the fancy dog beds and puppy food buffet. All of that changed quickly! Once Bloom realized that - perhaps for the first time in her life - she was safe, she emerged from her shell and hasn’t looked back. Of the three siblings, Bloom is the most laid-back and independent. Almost nothing makes Bloom happier than finding a cool toy and playing with it on her dog bed. That said, Bloom’s ultimate love is people. Bloom has a heart of gold. Once you’ve earned her trust with a couple of treats and some belly rubs, she is the gentlest and most loving puppy you will ever meet. She rarely tries to outdo her siblings for affection. Rather, she waits her turn and then saunters over to shower her foster parents with kisses and cuddles. Her sweet, yet curious spirit is simply irresistible. Bloom is a mega-foodie, so she will likely be fairly easy to train using food incentives. Bloom is doing very well with crate-training and house-training, but - because of her young age - will need a family committed to consistency over the next few months for her to thoroughly master these skills. While she hasn’t started leash training yet, her foster parents intend to introduce her to the leash soon. Bloom hasn’t met any cats at this point, but she’d likely quickly win over any feline companions. Bloom is truly the ideal puppy - easygoing yet playful, loving yet independent, smart yet silly, curious yet laid back. Bloom deserves only the best that life has to offer, and her foster parents are committed to finding her the perfect forever home. If sweet Bloom is pulling on your heartstrings, don’t hesitate to apply. There’s no doubt in our minds that she will be the most exceptional companion anyone could ever hope for.
Meet Heart! She is a spunky 2 year old pittie mix. Although she’s got big perky ears, Heart is deaf and would do best with a family that either has experience or is willing to put in the extra work to train and communicate with her through hand signals. Just because she can’t hear, doesn’t mean she can’t learn tricks! Heart knows how to sit, lay down, and shake. With the right owner, she could easily learn more!
Heart is very high energy and loves to climb, jump, and zoom across the yard. Because she can’t hear, Heart often struggles picking up cues from other dogs that they don’t want to play which can lead to negative reactions from other dogs. Some dogs just can’t handle all of her energy. Heart is crate trained, house trained, and with some correction, is able to loose leash walk. She does best eating and drinking water separately from other dogs and does not like sharing toys or her bed. She is food motivated and can solve any pet puzzle you give her.
Heart is hyper-vigilant and has the need to see everything around her to feel safe and secure. She needs time to adjust to her surroundings and slow introductions with any pet siblings is best, but once she is acclimated, watch out! She will love you till the end of time if you just meet her halfway. Heart would do best with an active family that love the outdoors and are not afraid to put in some extra work for her training

Haley is a loveable, energetic 8-month-old pup who loves snuggling on the couch or playing with other dogs. She is very loyal and protective in her foster home and seems to attach herself more toward the ladies of the home. She is potty trained and usually sleeps with her foster mom at night, but she is crated when mom leaves the house. Haley is very much still a puppy and loves playing and chewing on her toys and running around in the back yard. This sweet, timid soul really aims to please and tries very hard to be a good pup. She attends doggy daycare to continue her socialization and to work out her energy. She gets along with absolutely all dogs! Haley will be a perfect companion with anyone willing to dedicate the time and patience to adjust to her new home.
Gigi is estimated to be an 8-10-year-old lab/chow mix. Her foster mom, who works at the shelter where Gigi originally found herself, fell in love with her immediately. Gigi is the perfect size (just under 50 lbs), with a sweet disposition. She is quiet and very easy going too. Unfortunately the fact that she was older, and heartworm positive in an overcrowded shelter put her at risk which is how she ended up with us. Gigi is a very stoic dog. She loves attention but is not needy. She's not necessarily a cuddly dog, but she will let you pet and kiss her all day. She does not ever attempt to get on furniture or the bed. She prefers dog beds on the floor. Gigi has arthritis in her back legs, so sometimes she slips on hardwood floors, but this doesn't keep her from her evening "zoomies" around the house. She has a bit of trouble with stairs, particularly going up them. Gigi is housebroken. She is afraid of storms and, while crate trained, she does not enjoy her crate. Gigi is both dog and cat friendly, and she loves to go for walks. She would be perfect for someone looking for a very sweet, laid back companion. Please consider this older gal as your next family addition!
Meet Dodger Blue! He is a 7-month-old sweet, baby boy who has come a very long way. Dodger was found on the side of the road with his sister. Both had prolapsed rectums. Halfway There Rescue jumped in to save their lives with emergency surgery. Recovery was ruff and there was a lot of uncertainty about what their futures would look like. He has made leaps and bounds. While in recovery, Dodger has become crate and potty trained, but he does experience leaks from time to time. Dodger loves his foster-dog sister and his two foster-cat sisters. He loves nothing more than cuddles, scratches, chasing balls, and walks. He has been good with our neighbors' children and runs to the fence to see them when they are outside so he can get some extra love. He is finally learning to be a puppy after a difficult first 6 months of life. He cannot wait to cuddle with his furever family!
Sandy haired with a sparkly personality. Ruby is an older adult with puppy energy. She likes to play with toys and LOVES to chase balls. She’s great on a leash, crate trained, a perfect car rider. When she’s not playing, she loves to snuggle, which is fantastic because she’s so soft and cuddly. She needs a calm house without small kids. She is anxious around other dogs; she would be best as a solo doggo. She requires careful handling when it’s necessary to pick her up. Hopefully her confidence will build as she learns to trust new people.
Mary Jane is a three year old husky mix who, if she could speak, would have quite a story to tell. At a little less than a year old, Mary Jane got loose at the home of her family, while living outside, and was hit by a car. Her previous owners came home to find her pulling herself, by her front paws, back to the house while dragging the back half of her body. While her owners decided the “humane” thing to do would be to “put her out of her misery”, a Halfway There volunteer intervened immediately and raced her to the emergency vet. That decision would literally save Mary Jane’s life.
After being initially diagnosed with a broken leg and fractured pelvis, Mary Jane underwent surgery and was brought into a loving foster home to recuperate. After being in foster care a short time, it was realized that Mary Jane was showing some concerning signs that her injury may be more severe than initially diagnosed. She had not regained proper bladder and bowel control, and after a week was not yet up and walking. After another thorough exam and full body xrays (emergency vet had only taken partial images), a much more severe injury was revealed. Mary Jane had sustained a broken back and significant nerve damage when she had been hit by the car. Her future uncertain, Mary Jane’s foster family was determined to not give up on her and support her recovery. They believed that with faith, love, and patience, Mary Jane would have a good quality of life and be able to be considered healthy and adoptable.
Mary Jane’s foster family continued to provide the love and care she needed to recover, and after several more weeks it was a true miracle that Mary Jane was able to walk again. As a matter of fact, two years after she has come into foster care, Mary Jane has regained the ability to run, jump, and play just like every other dog. Aside from a slight limp, this little lady is the life of the party. She loves playing tug of war with toys and running around the yard with her foster siblings. Mary Jane enjoys going to the dog park, and she has truly never met a stranger. Even the kitties in her current foster home give her “two paws up.” Although Mary Jane’s recovery has been remarkable, she has not regained control of her bowels or bladder. To compensate for this, Mary Jane does need to wear diapers. She doesn’t mind at all though, and is patient and trusting of everyone, making her condition relatively easy to manage.
After more than two years in foster care, Mary Jane is looking to find her perfect forever family. She is a sweet and loving soul, who longs to be with people and truly appreciates every moment of life she has been given. Although she is adored and loved by the entire Halfway There family, it is our dream that Mary Jane will find her own home, complete with people who understand her needs and just how special she truly is.
